Sunday Prototype – 10/13/12 – The New TrailBlazer
Since we started using a laser engraver to do our cutting, we’ve been concentrating our efforts on updating and improving our production options. We are always making revisions, arriving at the best possible way to construct Skinths so that there is maximum versatility and minmal wasted space.
We recently added this statement to all of our product pages:
In an effort to provide the best quality products possible, we periodically make production modifications and improvements. Actual products may not be identical to the items in the photographs.
This week’s prototype is an extension of our post about the laser engraver, it’s not a completely new Skinth TrailBlazer, but we do want to show you what kind of new options we’ve been working on!
First, the new hardware we’ve been sourcing. Our Coyote Brown, Foliage Green and OD Green side release buckles are now sources from a USA manufacturer, so both the 1″ and .75″ buckles on this Coyote Brown Trailblazer are made just south of the border from us. The MilSpec 17337 nylon webbing is also sourced from the same supplier and is made to the stringent and hard wearing tolerances of the military gear.
Inside this TrailBlazer is the ever useful Altoids tin (which the TrailBlazer is designed around). A very rare Cabela’s Seclusion 3d Camo Leatherman Charge TTi sits in the side, previous TrailBlazer were just a bit too small for the Charge/Wave family. We also upgraded our thread to a bonded, UV rated T69 upholstery thread to ensure a super tough connection between seams.
We’ve tried several ways of adding MOLLE straps and we have finally found the perfect way to integrate them onto Skinths. We looked at where MOLLE straps are good and where they are bad. Molle straps buttoned at the bottom could be undo if there is a strong upward pressure caused by any pouch caught on a railing or car door, so we flipped the way the button snaps so there is no way it could be undone without purpose. This also negates punching a hole in the main body to add the bottom of the snap. The one continuous strap makes installing MOLLE much easier.
We are often asked if we could incorporate a belt loop + MOLLE, with the new MOLLE system, we are able to do that. A tight fitting 1.5″ belt can slip through the upper portion of the single continuous strap.
Attached to a pack, the TrailBlazer is an ideal way to organize and carry those smaller items that often need quick access. On a recent flight, our black TrailBlazer was perfect for holding our Altoids tin with our noise cancelling ear buds, a flashlight for those overnight dark flights, a pen for filling our custom forms, a couple of slots for small nail clippers, a pack of gum and a tube of lip balm to combat the recycled air.
That is all for this week. We had some downtime but we are back in action making up for lost time. Enjoy your week and come back again for a visit, heck, even stay a while.
